Newcomer Information - Driving Time in Hawai'i

(Below are questions that previous incoming interns had concerning their move to Hawai'i and the Graduate Medical Office response to these questions. Please review the following to see if your question has been answered before.)

How bad is the drive from Ewa Beach and Kapolei to Tripler? My wife and I have found nice rental villages in both and were considering living there but were concerned over the drive time.

The drive time from Ewa Beach and Kapolei can vary from 30 minutes to two hours depending on where you actually live, when you leave, whether schools are in session, and if there are accidents or vehicle stalls. Going home is no different. You will be roughly 12 -16 miles from Tripler and about 25 - 30 miles from downtown Honolulu. This is big city traffic during rush hour but it's not nearly as bad as Washington, D.C. My wife and I went to dinner downtown after work the other night and left Tripler at 5:00 p.m. We finally got to the restaurant which was no more than 10 miles away at 6:15 p.m.

If I was to live by or a little past Diamond Head would my commute be the opposite way of the flow of traffic in the morning?

I lived in that general vicinity a few years ago. It wasn't nearly as bad as the drive from Ewa Beach in the morning but could take 30 minutes to an hour even though it is only 10 or so miles. You could still encounter occasional delays unless you leave early. It may take a while to get home but that is normal no matter where you live.
